Some ancient cities were found. Actually, I think what happened is that during routine surveys and photographing of the vast expanses in Lybia some satellite imagery picked up the residuals of ancient cities. The technology has been out for a while and people are just now beginning to pour over some of the information searching for anomalies such as the outlines of cities or castles (been helpful in the Amazon Basin and Central America).
The satellite photography of these regions is fairly common now. Oil exploration, or rather many types of resource exploration rely on satellite photography for the initial stages of selection for physical exploration. It goes without saying the military enjoys employing satellite photography to find 'things.'
