Harvesting Electricity

I have often heard that the manner in which we shuttle electricity around is very inefficient and that we loose some 30% of it as it frizzles off into the air. Apparently most electrical devices do the same, the put off ambient energy that is lost, fizzling into the air. But Dennis Seigel of Germany has found out a way to take advantage of it.

He's built a harvester. His prototype is small, but apparently it pulled enough ambient energy from the air to recharge his double A batteries. Now we don't quite know if he harvested energy from a fire plant or a coffee maker . . . or if he can just pull it from the air, how close he has to be etc etc . . . but the concept is a really cool one. If we could gather energy from the air around us we could build one into your cell phone and no more charging cords. Very cool.

As a side note, anything that has the word harvester in it is usually pretty cool . . . unless it is followed by the words "dog," "horse," or "people" . . .

If I correctly recall 15+ year old discussions on this subject, collecting juice in this way is generally illegal in the US.
